Our first site-specific work at Houghton Hall was a Skyspace by Turrell, and soon after I asked Richard Long to create a piece for the grounds using slate." - Hall & State Rooms at Houghton Hall and Gardens, Norfolk
Hall & State Rooms / See & Do / Hall & State Rooms History and Elegance Converge in Timeless Grandeur One of the most captivating features of Houghton Hall is its splendid State Rooms, meticulously designed to showcase the opulence and refinement of the Georgian era. These rooms served as the backdrop for lavish gatherings, political meetings, and royal receptions, reflecting the prestige and influence of the Walpole family. Hall & State Rooms The Arcade Visitors enter through the door under the west steps, rebuilt in 1973 by Lady Sybil Cholmondeley in her husband's memory. Inside, you'll find the lower hall, or Arcade, as it's always been known. Since the late 18th century, this area has been the main entrance, witnessing bustling activity during Sir Robert's hunting days or political gatherings. Today, it hosts estate celebrations, retaining original furnishings like mahogany benches and rail-back chairs. A door halfway down the south wall leads to the foot of the great staircase, where the interior's drama unfolds. The Great Staircase The Doric columns of the stone temple catch the eye in the stairwell. Climbing the staircase with its carved mahogany balustrade reveals the temple's purpose: it holds the bronze copy of the Borghese Gladiator, discovered in 1611 and reproduced by Le Sueur for the Earl of Pembroke's garden. This composition hints at William Kent's originality, with the advancing figure seeming to beckon visitors toward the Stone Hall. Original carved wooden gilt Arms adorn the staircase corners, alongside some original glass bowls. The Stone Hall The grand double-height Stone Hall, inspired by Inigo Jones's Queen's House at Greenwich, serves as a transitional space between the outdoor and indoor areas, preparing visitors for the magnificence of the interiors that follow. Its ornate decoration, featuring intricate carving and plasterwork, harmonises with the Hall’ strong architectural character. Nothing is arbitrary in William Kent's interior design: the suite of hall settees was meticulously placed in these specific spots within the Stone Hall, and remains there to this day. The Saloon The opulent Saloon, adorned with crimson caffoy wall coverings and intricate gilded door surrounds, was once adorned with a dense array of paintings, later sold to Catherine the Great of Russia. Today, her portrait graces the chimney piece, a gift to the 3rd Earl. Richly detailed and gilded, these architectural features are crafted from solid mahogany, reflecting Sir Robert Walpole's influence in lowering import duties on the material. It is within this room that William Kent's prowess as an architectural decorator shines brightest at Houghton. The White Drawing Room An exquisite room adorned with elaborate ceiling panels and wall hangings that were designed by William Kent. The suite of carved and gilded chairs with silk and velvet coverings was made for this room and the preceding two rooms to form a separate state apartment within the house. The paintings displayed in this room include various family portraits. Charles Turner's portrait of Georgina, Marchioness of Cholmondeley, with her younger son, William, from circa 1805 hangs above the fireplace. The Green Velvet Bedchamber The Green Velvet Bedchamber is Houghton's most sumptuous and grandest guest bedroom and is dedicated to Venus, goddess of Love and Sleep. Some fifteen feet in height, and draped in green velvet, the imposing bed is another masterpiece by William Kent and one of the finest examples of an eighteenth-century state bed anywhere in the world. It is tradition that newlywed members of the family spend their wedding night in The Green Velvet Bedchamber. Venus’s great shell sits against the head cloth and is echoed in the ceiling, tapestries and fireplace. The Tapestry Dressing-Room The Tapestry Dressing Room at Houghton Hall is hung with several 17th century tapestries depicting key members of the House of Stuart, namely King James I and Anne of Denmark, King Charles I and Henrietta Maria, and King Christian IV of Denmark, with pilaster strips featuring Stuart children. The tapestries are among the few items at Houghton that once adorned the Walpole family's Tudor manor house that previously stood on the same site. The Tapestry Dressing Room also houses the consort's throne when it's not in use at the Palace of Westminster. The Embroidered Bed Chamber Possibly the piano nobile's most sumptuous room, it features William Kent's significant ceiling painting, an apt poetic allegory for a bedroom. Its centerpiece is a 17th-century state bed with embroidered curtains, likely commissioned by Sir Edward Walpole around 1665, adorned with a subtle blend of oriental and chinoiserie patterns. The canopy's corner fastenings display the Walpole family arms, bestowed by King Henry III in 1230, a symbol proudly carried by the family through generations. The Cabinet Room In 1779, George Walpole, 3rd Earl of Orford, replaced William Kent's original design scheme for the Cabinet Room at Houghton. The green velvet hangings were removed and replaced with striking blue-ground Chinese hand-painted paper. The room is dominated by a child's four-poster bed, replete with Chinese embroidery, which was a christening present to Sir Robert Walpole's grandson from King George II and Queen Caroline, his godparents. Among the other furniture in the Cabinet Room is a pair of beautifully carved and gilded rococo mirrors. The Marble Parlour The Marble Parlour at Houghton Hall, originally crafted for Sir Robert Walpole's opulent gatherings, features a fireplace designed to discreetly accommodate servants replenishing food and wine. Collaboratively designed by William Kent and sculptor John Michael Rysbrack, the room is adorned with grape motifs, seen on the fireplace mantle, painted ceiling, cornice, and alcove sconces. Rysbrack's impressive relief above the fireplace portrays 'The Sacrifice to Bacchus', inspired by the Greco-Roman god of wine. The Common Parlour This room contains one of the largest collections of Walpole family portraits and was used as the family dining room during Sir Robert’s lifetime and is, therefore, far more intimate than other rooms in the house. It is deliberately devoid of the spectacular decorative style that characterises the other state rooms at Houghton. In many ways, the plainness of the room elevates the prominence of the paintings. The room’s crimson and green damask chairs were designed by William Kent and are original to the house. The Library Unaltered since Sir Robert Walpole's era, the Library boasts mahogany bookshelves adorned with intricate architectural carvings. The pilasters' bases conceal drawers lined with mahogany, still pristine. Sir Robert's extensive collection reflects his scholarly pursuits, featuring classical literature, history, and architectural folios from France and Italy. The room's focal point, a writing table, unveiled Kent's original drawings, including details of adjacent Common Parlour's picture hangs, discovered by the present Marquess of Cholmondeley. Originally accessed via outside steps leading to the Stone Hall, these rooms were meticulously designed to awe Sir Robert Walpole's esteemed guests, serving as the venue for grand-scale entertaining and showcasing some of Walpole's most prized paintings. Opulent Elegance The State Bedroom, with the famous Shell bed, was hung with green velvet, then the most expensive material, with silver gilt embroidery and fringing. Venus’s shell on the headboard is echoed in the ceiling, tapestries and fireplace . On the other side of the house, the dining-room, or Marble Parlour, is dedicated to Bacchus, and bunches of grapes and vine leaves appear on the marble chimney-piece, on the plaster ceilings and carved above the doors. The overmantel frames the Sacrifice to Bacchus, by Michael Rysbrack, while arches framed in different sorts of marble lead to a hidden recess. Walpole spared no expense in the decoration of these rooms, although they would rarely have been used, as he only visited Norfolk twice a year. The hall featured impressive modern sculptures alongside intriguing older artifacts. I'm eager to return soon. The friendly staff warmly welcomed visitors, offering detailed information and insights into the hall's history and exhibits. The hall was stunning. Especially the ornate ceilings. We loved the library too. There was a lovely man as we came up the main stairs, maybe called Graham, he was knowledgeable and made us welcome. All the staff we met were in fact so friendly. What a hidden gem!!! We came across Houghton Hall whilst talking with friends. It is absolutely beautiful from the Hall, the gardens, the white deer, the Chapel in fact everything about it is amazing. I would certainly recommend and can guarentee you'll have a great day. We loved being able to view such wonderful pieces. The guides were all so keen to share the history of the house with the visitors, and were very informative. A sensational day out! A real treat. House and grounds are outstanding with a surprise round every corner. Knowledgable and friendly staff. Will definitely be visiting again. The staff were amazing, informative, passionate and super friendly, how delightful to hear from them that they all felt appreciated by the family which clearly showed in the way they dealt with visitors. This is a first rate stately home that ticks all of the boxes . The interior is most impressive from the sculptures to the model soldiers and the staff are very informative. The main house itself was beyond expectations. Each room had a ‘wow’ factor surpassing anything we had seen before (including Blenheim Palace). The Members of staff in each room were genuinely friendly and informative without being pushy. Loved it. One of England's Treasure Houses that is a must see for any serious architecture enthusiast. Pictures alone do not convey the stately dignity of the house. The proportions are excellent. It is large but not overwhelming. The interiors are exceptional not only for the craftsmanship and design but also the preservation. - John Virtue at Houghton Hall and Gardens
01 May - 25 September, 2022 John Virtue 'NORTH SEA PAINTINGS' The Exhibition Houghton Hall was delighted to present North Sea Paintings by John Virtue, an exhibition in collaboration with Albion Barn. The North Sea Paintings emerged as a ritual, produced from weekly walks on Fridays to the sea. Virtue had moved to Norfolk in 2009, and the captivating journey from the beach at Cley Next the Sea towards Blakeney Point became the subject of an expansive series of paintings. Virtue characterized his artist’s eye in its glances, deliberately keeping his subject impermanent, shadowy. In the most literal sense, he worked with impressions. This glancing technique allowed for the now familiar aspects of the landscape to recede from the eye; the paintings focused on the far more changeable and elemental movements of the coastline. These walks produced a surfeit of sketchbook studies that became the raw material from which the large-scale acrylic works were reconstituted, amalgamating the multiple images upon the singular surface of the canvas. This method of piecing together could be understood as a direct interaction with the grid constructions of his earlier work while releasing the painted environment from the constraints of a rigid form. The practice of walking, drawing, constructing back in the studio, was one that had followed Virtue throughout his career as he moved from Green Haworth in Northeast Lancashire to the edge of Dartmoor; Exeter; London; Italy; and finally, Norfolk. Virtue had risen to prominence with his pen and ink landscapes assemblages of drawings, capturing Green Haworth on the edge of Pennine Moorland with densely wrought hatching. Gradually, Virtue had moved back to painting and moved increasingly to abstraction – a tonal departure that was best captured by the artist’s relocation from the city to the countryside. The mark making within these North Sea Paintings was explicit: it was a discussion of the brutality and primality of weather upon an environment – a distinctly different effect than the more subtle bleeding and blending that occurred within his cityscapes. About the Artist Born in Accrington, Lancashire (1947), John Virtue pursued his artistic education at the Slade School of Fine Art from 1965 to 1969. His notable affiliations include being an Associate Artist at the National Gallery from 2003 to 2005 and an honorary professor of Fine Art at the University of Plymouth from 2003 to 2008. Further, he held the position of an honorary fellow at Yale University from 2006 to 2010. His impressive body of work is showcased in numerous public collections, including distinguished institutions such as the Tate Gallery, London; British Museum, London; Victoria & Albert Museum, London; Arts Council England; Government Art Collection; Yale Centre for British Art, New Haven, CT; Walker Art Centre, Minneapolis; Contemporary Art Society, London; London Hospital NHS Trust; Guildhall Museum & Art Gallery, London; Courtauld Gallery Collection of Drawings & Prints, London; Somerset House Trust Collection, London; Towner Art Gallery and Museum, Eastbourne; and The Queensland Museum and Gallery of Modern Art, Australia. Acknowledgements With thanks to Albion Barn for curating this exhibition of works by John Virtue at Houghton Hall. “As you leave behind the coastal marshland and the low Dutch-like villages, all you have is a trajectory to the North Sea, sand going out, a single line for four and a quarter miles to a vanishing point, an event horizon. ” John Virtue More Past Exhibitions Ernst Gamperl Oak Vessels | 2022 Chris Levine 528 Hz Love Frequency | 2021 Tony Cragg Sculpture | 2021 Past Exhibitions Stay well-informed Don't miss a thing. - James Turrell at Houghton Hall and Gardens
07 June - 24 October, 2015 James Turrell 'LIGHTSCAPE' The Exhibition In 2015, Houghton Hall, Norfolk, hosted an ambitious and significant exhibition of James Turrell’s light pieces, many of which were collected by the Marquess of Cholmondeley, who had long been an admirer of his work. An exhibition dedicated to James Turrell’s work had been a long-held ambition of Lord Cholmondeley’s. He had first discovered Turrell’s work twenty years prior and, in 2000, had invited him to Houghton to install a ‘Skyspace’ amongst the trees on the west side of the house. Soon afterwards, a rusty water tank was removed from an 18th-century folly in the park to make way for his atmospheric interior space, ‘St Elmo’s Breath’. The exhibition offered a unique alternative to typical exhibitions, with its silent, eerie ambiance and vibrant colors set amidst the tranquil landscapes of Houghton’s grounds. Visitors were immersed in Turrell’s world of color and contemplation, experiencing the transformative power of light in the historic setting. As darkness fell, the illuminated artworks created a surreal atmosphere, casting a mesmerizing glow over the hall and its surroundings. About the Artist Turrell is widely acknowledged as one of the most important artists working today. From the mid 1960’s onwards his principal concern has been the way we apprehend light and space. His study of mathematics and perceptual psychology, as well as his Quaker upbringing and background as a pilot, inform his practice. His first exhibition in 1967 of ‘projection pieces,’ used high intensity light projectors to give the illusion of a solid geometrical object, often seemingly floating in space. From these investigations of light, Turrell went on to begin his series of ‘Skyspaces’. These are enclosed viewing chambers that affect our perception of the sky. Since then he has continued to create works using light as his medium. Perhaps his most celebrated works are his ‘Ganzfeld’ chambers, whole spaces immersed in light; as well as his more recent ‘Tall Glass’ series, which resemble windows of slowly changing colour. Meanwhile, Turrell continues work on a monumental project at Roden Crater, an extinct volcano in Arizona. Here he has created a series of viewing chambers, tunnels and apertures to heighten our sense of the heavens and earth in one of the most ambitious artistic endeavours of modern times. Acknowledgements Lord Cholmondeley extends his gratitude to Christie's and Pace Gallery for their sponsorship of the James Turrell Skyspace exhibition. ‘Light is a powerful substance. We have a primal connection to it.’ James Turrell More Past Exhibitions Anish Kapoor Sculpture | 2020 Chris Levine 528 Hz Love Frequency | 2021 Houghton Revisited Old Masters | 2013 Past Exhibitions Stay well-informed Don't miss a thing. Houghton Hall has an amazing walled garden. You feel like you’re moving from one room into another. There’s nothing better than a walled garden… that encapsulated world. An absolutely fantastic place to visit. The walled garden was a complete surprised, not the usual tired garden of the National Trust. The walled garden was simply magnificent. We left with so many ideas for our garden. You can easily spend an hour or two strolling round. What an absolute treat for the eyes and nose! We have visited on numerous occasions and have watched the stunning improvements made within the walled garden. We had a most enjoyable morning looking around the amazing walled garden. I am no expert gardener, but I loved this place. The flowers, shrubs, fruit trees, hedges and lawns were laid out brilliantly. The walled gardens were exceptional and we spent a lot of time there. Of particular interest was the Fire Water - a literal water fountain with a flame of fire coming out on top of the water. We had a wonderful time at Houghton Hall. We started in the walled garden which was probably the best we have ever visited despite many of the flowers and plants being over their best. The design is inspirational. - Houghton Revisited at Houghton Hall and Gardens
17 May - 24 November, 2013 Houghton Revisited The Exhibition In 1779, the family of Sir Robert Walpole, Britain’s first prime minister, sold his remarkable art collection to Catherine the Great, Empress of Russia. More than two centuries later, these masterpieces, rarely seen outside Russia since that time, returned to Houghton Hall for an extraordinary exhibition named "Houghton Revisited: Masterpieces from the Hermitage." Curated by Dr. Thierry Morel, this ambitious project brought back some 70 European Old Master paintings from Sir Robert Walpole's collection, now part of the State Hermitage Museum in St. Petersburg. With detailed watercolours, drawings, and plans, the paintings were rehung throughout our grand hall, a logistical feat made possible by loans from various institutions worldwide. HRH the Prince of Wales, a frequent visitor, praised Houghton Hall as one of England's greatest treasures. Walpole’s collection includes paintings by Van Dyck, Poussin, Rubens, and Rembrandt About the Artist Acknowledgements Special thanks to Christies, Oracle Capital Group and BP Russia amongst the corporate sponsors of the show. It won both the Hudson Heritage Award for Best Event and Apollo Magazine’s Exhibition of the Year award. Model Soldier Museum / See & Do / Model Soldier Museum Discover the World's Largest Private Collection of Model Soldiers Established in 1928 by the 6th Marquess of Cholmondeley, father of the current Marquess, The Soldier Museum stands as the world's largest private collection of model soldiers. Originating from the Marquess's schoolboy days at Houghton Hall, the collection expanded post-war at Cholmondeley Castle in Cheshire, where he frequently commissioned custom battle scenes. A Battle of Waterloo diorama shows the confrontation between Wellington and Napoleon, the Royal Scots Greys’ famous charge, and the French Calvary’s attack on British squares. A diorama of a fight between the French and Germans in the Franco Prussian War features Cantinieres, ladies riding side-saddle carrying brandy and cigarettes for their Regiment, often in the thick of battle. Craftsmanship and Militaria Many of the models and dioramas were made by such notable manufacturers as Edward Suren, and Greenwood & Ball for the very small figures. The museum displays are complemented by an array of assorted militaria, containing some fine military prints and paintings (including two by the renowned military artist, Terence Cuneo), a selection of vintage helmets and some regimental drums. The house and stables were interesting, along with the model soldier museum. One of the best experiences I've had. I think my husband would have paid the entry fee for the soldier museum alone. Excellent series of model soldier showcases with battle formations involving thousands of troops. I really enjoyed the Model Soldier museum as well which was packed with dioramas featuring battle scenes from the 1745 Jacobite Rebellion up until WW2. There is a lot to see and do here. The model soldier display provides an interesting (for me) tour through European and Colonial history and there is plenty of polished leather on display in the stables. Do not miss the exhibition of you soldiers, it is very informative and quite spectacular. Toy soldier museum EPIC depictions of multiple (mainly 19th century) battles. - Damien Hirst at Houghton Hall and Gardens
25 March - 15 July, 2018 Damien Hirst 'COLOUR SPACE PAINTINGS & SCULPTURE' The Exhibition Colour Space was a landmark exhibition at Houghton featuring current works by artist Damien Hirst, one of the most remarkable artists of his generation. The ornate interiors of the State Rooms were transformed by Hirst's new Colour Space paintings, which took the place of Walpole and Cholmondeley family portraits. A selection of the artist's best-known sculptures from the last 15 years was also positioned around the park and grounds - as well as in the house. The sculptures included seven pieces installed in the park. They included the celebrated Virgin Mother (2005–2006), which was shown in the courtyard of the Royal Academy in 2006, and Charity (2002–2003), which was installed on Hoxton Square in 2003 and outside the Royal West of England Academy of Art in Bristol in 2011. About the Artist Damien Hirst, a controversial figure in recent art history, rose to fame in the 1990s. With support from Charles Saatchi, an advertising tycoon, Hirst gained rapid recognition for his unconventional artworks, including a shark suspended in formaldehyde titled "The Physical Impossibility of Death in the Mind of Someone Living," which both fascinated and repulsed audiences in 1991. In 1995, the same year he won the Turner Prize, Hirst's installation featuring rotting animal carcasses was banned in New York due to concerns about public health. Often compared to Sid Vicious from the Sex Pistols, Hirst embodies the commercialization and celebrity culture that originated with Andy Warhol. Acknowledgements The exhibition was curated by Mario Codognato. Dorotheum served as the lead sponsor of the exhibition. Despite its traditional heritage, the auction house has consistently showcased innovative contemporary works and previews, including those of Damien Hirst, for the past thirty years. Mulberry provided additional support as a sponsoring partner. "We are delighted to have this opportunity to show Damien Hirst’s new paintings in the State Rooms at Houghton, together with some of his best-known sculptures in the grounds. It is perhaps the first time that Hirst has shown a significant body of work in a formal country house setting. William Kent’s gilded interiors will be transformed for the duration of the show.” Lord Cholmondeley More Past Exhibitions Henry Moore Nature & Inspiration | 2019 James Turrell Lightscape | 2015 Chris Levine 528 Hz Love Frequency | 2021 Past Exhibitions Stay well-informed Don't miss a thing. - Old Stables & Tack Room at Houghton Hall and Gardens, Norfolk
Old Stables & Tack Room / See & Do / Old Stables & Tack Room Reimagining Equestrian Grandeur: The Stables of Houghton Hall During the rebuilding of Houghton Hall, Sir Robert Walpole constructed the impressive Stables between 1733 and 1735, opting for Yellow Snatterscham stone, a striking contrast to the main house's grey Whitby stone. He, a frequent hunter at Houghton, had aimed to garner support from the Norfolk gentry by investing in such lavish stables to showcase his wealth and quality horseflesh. Today, the Stable block houses the Café, Model Soldier Museum, Gift Shop and W.Cs Old Stables & Tack Room The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg The Stables at Houghton Hall and Gardens 1.jpg Setting a new standard for stable design at Houghton Hall The interior of this imposing building features superbly constructed brick vault ceilings supported on timber pillars, meticulously planned to house eighty horses of varying quality, with separate stalls for the most valuable and shared accommodations for coach horses, reflecting the hierarchy of its equine occupants; dark timber partitions, stone pillars, and Diocletian windows characterize the stalls, while adjacent areas cater to the storage of feed, harnesses, and tack, setting a new standard for stable design at Houghton Hall. Stable Block Delights Whether you wish to indulge your equestrian interests and explore the rich history of the Georgian Old Stables and Tack Room, or are intrigued by the captivating military dioramas at the Model Soldier Museum, the Stable block offers something for everyone. Enjoy a light lunch or beverage at the Café, which has outdoor seating and marvel at the mesmerizing James Turrell's 'Raemar Magenta' lightscape. Indulge in artisanal treats at the gift shop or take a leisurely stroll to soak in the ambiance. We look forward to welcoming you. Then on to the Stables cafe and shops - all of which were fantastic. Had a wonderful, good value lunch and were tempted by many items in the shop. Every element, house, stables and gardens were outstanding. The staff were amazing, informative, passionate and super friendly, The approach to the house is through the massive stables where the cafe is housed. In fact I enjoy the stables on a sunny day better than I do the house. Wonderful stable block, good value cafe, could have sat there all day people watching, watching the house martins, swift’s swallows flying around. The stable block itself offers an interesting contrast to the house. It follows the same classical proportions but with less opulent materials. (Although the horses did live in wood-paneled luxury!)
