- Sean Scully at Houghton Hall and Gardens
23 April - 29 October, 2023 Sean Scully 'SMALLER THAN SKY' The Exhibition Sean Scully took over the grounds and historic interiors of Houghton Hall in Norfolk for an exhibition showcasing the full range of the artist’s sculpture. In the Hall and Contemporary Gallery, the artist also showed a significant group of paintings and works on paper. Several new works were included in the exhibition, such as stacks made of sandstone, wood, glass, and marble. The sculptures ranged in scale from small maquettes to monumental open structures in steel, such as "Crate of Air," and a new "Wall of Light" sculpture, constructed from locally sourced limestone. The exhibition showcased Scully’s outdoor sculptures in dialogue with works in other media. It also included a selection of paintings and works on paper made over the past few years but with key reference to works from earlier in Scully’s career. These works were displayed in the grand rooms of the house and in the North Colonnade and the Contemporary Gallery. Sean Scully's concern for the environment and his focus on nature were reflected in the title of the exhibition. An important component was his book, Endangered Sky, a collaboration with the poet Kelly Grovier, focusing on the plight of bird life, memorialising those already extinct and those which were close to it. The book was launched at Houghton and was shown in vitrines as part of the exhibition. About the Artist Hailing from Dublin, Sean Scully rose to prominence as a painter in the early 1970s, forging a distinct form of abstraction throughout the decade. His artistic journey shifted away from the geometric purity of minimalism, embracing expressive, multi-layered abstract painting. The body of work that earned him global recognition features coloured bars and horizontal beams, some adorned with inset or relief elements. Establishing himself in New York during the mid-1970s, Scully currently resides and works in both New York and several European cities, including London. Widely acclaimed for his watercolours, drawings, pastels, and prints, as well as his photography, he has garnered significant attention for his critically acclaimed sculptures over the past two decades. Notable among them is the monumental "Opulent Ascension," installed at San Giorgio Maggiore for the 2019 Venice Biennale, attracting over 360,000 visitors. More recently, "Oak Stacks," crafted from historic local Danish timber, stood in Bertel Thorvaldsen’s Square, Copenhagen, marking the start of the city’s 2023 designation as the World Capital of Architecture. Scully's exhibitions span the globe, and his work is held in esteemed collections of major museums and galleries worldwide. Acknowledgements The exhibition was curated by Sean Rainbird, an esteemed art historian and museum director, who previously served as the Director of the National Gallery of Ireland (2012-2022) and held the position of Senior Curator at Tate. Organised by the Houghton Arts Foundation, with support from Lisson Gallery and Thaddaeus Ropac gallery, and key assistance from the artist and his studio, this remarkable showcase is made possible. A comprehensive illustrated catalogue featuring a text by Sean Rainbird accompanied the exhibition. “England, as we’ve seen from the fabulous paintings by constable, is a country very informed by the sky. People talked about the sky all the time. They talked about the weather, or the clouds, the wet. So, it was a source of inspiration. When you put sculptures outside, you are aware that the sky is illuminating them and conditioning how they look. Whatever you put out there is always humbled by the bigness of the sky.” Sean Scully 2023 More Past Exhibitions Ernst Gamperl Oak Vessels | 2022 Chris Levine 528 Hz Love Frequency | 2021 John Virtue North Sea Paintings | 2023 Past Exhibitions Stay well-informed Don't miss a thing. - Deer Park at Houghton Hall and Gardens, Norfolk
Deer Park / See & Do / Deer Park The Legacy of Houghton Hall's Deer Park There's always been a deer park at Houghton Hall, dating back to the innovative landscaping efforts of Charles Bridgeman in the early 18th century. Bridgeman's departure from formal design principles ushered in a more natural, organic style that integrated elements of the surrounding wilderness. Some of the trees he planted still thrive today, providing both beauty and sustenance for the park's inhabitants. While many mistake them for albinos, white fallow deer are not uncommon within the species. Originally bred by the 5th Marquess of Cholmondeley in the late 19th century, these deer, once considered a Victorian indulgence, now contribute significantly to the park's ecosystem. A Sustainable Approach to Game Management Beyond their aesthetic appeal, the white fallow deer serve a practical purpose in Houghton Hall's ecosystem. Robert Hall, Head Gamekeeper, describes them affectionately as "ornamental lawnmowers," highlighting their role in maintaining the park's vegetation through grazing. This underscores the estate's commitment to responsible game management and sustainability, ensuring the harmonious coexistence of wildlife and landscape. We spent a fantastic few hours enjoying all it had to offer. White deer roam the grounds and they were a joy to watch. Beautiful walled garden, deer in grounds, nice playground with zip wire and restaurant helpful with food allergies. We had a lovely day and would totally recommend The parkland is well maintained and there are lots of deer to be seen. We saw a large herd of white deer. The grounds are magnificent with the ghostly white deer meandering around under mature trees. On your right you have a magnificent view of the Hall and beautifully kept grounds. There were loads of Red Kites and also a number of white deer. A huge place, plenty of space and just so enjoyable - I am not a particular art or sculpture fan but they are all so interesting - love how light and reflection is used - The house and sculptures are outstanding with a wonderful collection of permanent sculptures and a new visiting collection every year. The grounds had a superb collection of sculptures that we found fascinating, we could have spent much more time on some of the sculptures, particularly Skyscape. that somehow made the clouds and sky active and interesting. The sculptures outside were varied, engaging and fun to find almost like a mini maze which again captured the interest of our little boy. Beautiful walled garden, deer in grounds, nice playground... Wow… Houghton Hall. I went to see the Sean Scully sculptures but didn’t realise there were so many other brilliant pieces in the grounds. The grounds are beautifully kept After touring the splendid and wonderfully maintained grounds we did a tour of the permanent sculptures and they were delightful. I was particularly taken with Waterflame by Jeppe Hein in the walled garden. HAF continues to build a collection of contemporary art in the grounds of Houghton Hall, including a number of site-specific commissions. Curated by the artist and sponsored by Dorotheum. “I am particularly grateful to Tony for the chance to show his sculptures here in Norfolk, and for agreeing to curate the exhibition himself. I have always been a great admirer of his work, and it will be incredibly exciting to see how it will come together and interact with the historic landscape and interiors of Houghton. As life is no longer, for the moment, as we once knew it due to the challenges of COVID 19, we have been faced with some extraordinary logistical problems; not least transporting exhibits to the UK from Tony’s studio in Germany. I would especially like to thank Dorotheum and Thaddaeus Ropac Gallery for their support as this year’s exhibition sponsors.’’ Lord Cholmondeley More Past Exhibitions Anish Kapoor Sculpture | 2020 Henry Moore Nature & Inspiration | 2019 Damien Hirst Paintings & Sculptures | 2018 Past Exhibitions Stay well-informed Don't miss a thing. - Ernst Gamperl at Houghton Hall and Gardens
07 August - 25 September, 2022 Ernst Gamperl 'OAK VESSELS' The Exhibition In 2018, sculptor and wood turner Ernst Gamperl received a generous gift from the Marquess and Marchioness of Cholmondeley: an oak tree, believed to be centuries old, possibly dating back to the establishment of Houghton Hall Estate in 1722 by Sir Robert Walpole. Gamperl, known for his sustainable practices, prefers working with wood sourced from trees at the end of their life, often fallen due to natural causes or conservation efforts. This oak, among others of Northern European heritage like beech, yew, olive, and ash, would become material for his renowned hand-turned vessels. Gamperl's acclaimed work, exhibited globally, includes twenty unique vessels crafted from this oak, displayed at Houghton Hall as part of its tercentenary celebrations. Despite being made of wood, these vessels possess a fluidity and texture resembling woven baskets or textured papier-mâché, a result of Gamperl's turning process using unseasoned wood. The drying process reveals fissures and knots, enhancing the surface's character, sometimes joined delicately or left open to add intrigue. Symbolically, these vessels, crafted from a tree that likely witnessed Houghton Hall's foundation, represent the passage of three centuries. They embody the tree's life cycle, from sapling to mature oak, serving as a microcosm for the ecosystem it sustained, including insects, birds, and fungi. Gamperl's sculptures thus commemorate the tree's journey, from growth to transformation into exquisite art pieces. About the Artist Ernst Gamperl is a self-taught artist and master craftsman who, over many years, has achieved an extraordinary understanding of wood. This has allowed him create beautiful, organic vessel forms primarily in oak, but also in other materials such as ash, maple and beech. Turning wood when it is wet, he takes his cue for the final shape of the vessel from the natural characteristics of his material. Working the wood at the lathe, he allows it to bulge, warp and crack during the drying process. To hold the cracks and fissures together he uses wooden and wire staples, which are used to great effect and add further interest to each piece. Gamperl observes the distinctive qualities of the wood; the grain, colour, grooves, knots and burrs and enhances their beauty with surface treatment. He waxes and polishes and contrasts the smooth and shiny with the rough-hewn and scarred. Continuously developing his skills, recent work sees the addition of clay powders and minerals to the surface of the form. This allows him achieve interesting tonal variations in finished pieces, while a focus on hollowing has seen the creation of objects with smaller openings. Ernst Gamperl has won multiple awards for his sculptures. His work is in museum collections worldwide, this includes The Museum of Arts and Crafts, Hamburg; The International Design Museum/Neue Sammlung, Germany; Collection Issey Miyake, Japan; The National Foundation for Contemporary Art, Paris and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London. Gamperl lives and works in Northern Italy. Acknowledgements The installation was curated by Anthony Slayter-Ralph. The exhibition has been organised at Houghton Hall in collaboration with Anthony Slayter-Ralph fine art, Hudson NY. Your email* First name Last name Yes, subscribe me to your newsletter. Sign Up About 'In Praise of Shadows' traces Barnaby Hosking's artistic journey, starting from his residency at Houghton Hall in June 2013, where he lived in a Mongolian yurt amidst the picturesque landscape, adopting the role of an "Ornamental Hermit." Since then, Hosking has drawn inspiration from this immersive experience, producing a diverse body of work spanning painting, sculpture, sound, and more recently, bleached velvet. Hosking's practice often involves solitary art-making expeditions, which allow for deep introspection and a profound connection with his surroundings. He utilizes velvet as a medium to convey intimacy, blending photographic imagery with tactile sensations to evoke memories. By bleaching imagery into the velvet, Hosking captures the clarity and depth of his experiences, presenting large abstract developments of this technique in this exhibition, marking the culmination of his residency at Houghton Hall.
- Henry Moore at Houghton Hall and Gardens
01 May - 29 September, 2019 Henry Moore 'NATURE & INSPIRATION' The Exhibition In a unique collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation, Houghton Hall presented the first significant show of the artist’s work in East Anglia. The exhibition included several monumental outdoor pieces in the grounds of the house, as well as a selection of smaller works, models, and etchings, which were shown in the ground floor gallery spaces. There were also sculptural interventions in the State Rooms, particularly in The Stone Hall. Highlights included many of Moore’s most celebrated works such as "Large Reclining Figure 1984," "The Arch 1963-69," "Three Piece Sculpture: Vertebrae 1968-69," and "Upright Motive No.8 1955-56." Godfrey Worsdale, Director, Henry Moore Foundation, said: “The Foundation was delighted that Henry Moore’s work was seen in the remarkable surroundings of Houghton Hall. Over recent years, Houghton has become increasingly recognized for the platform it gives to artists, and in particular to the work of sculptors. Henry Moore was frequently engaged by the relationship of his work with architecture and always pleased to see his monumental forms in natural light and settings; this exhibition enabled both to be seen to magnificent effect.” About the Artist Henry Moore (1898 – 1986) is considered to be one of the most important British artists of the 20th Century and arguably the most internationally celebrated sculptor of the modern era. Moore was a pioneer, and the first British artist to become a global star in his own lifetime. His work came to symbolize post-war modernism and can be said to have caused a British sculptural renaissance. Moore’s sculpture can be seen in innumerable museum collections around the world. He worked in many different mediums, but his most recognizable works are large bronze groups using both figurative and abstract elements. He also produced fibreglass versions of some of his most iconic pieces, specifically for exhibition, and two of these will be on show at Houghton. Moore left a large body of work to the Foundation, which he set up in the grounds of his house at Much Hadham, Hertfordshire, in 1977. Part of the Foundation’s remit is to make loans and organize exhibitions both in this country and abroad. Acknowledgements Presented in a unique collaboration with the Henry Moore Foundation and curated by Sebastiano Barassi. The exhibition was sponsored by Gagosian. "It is a great accolade for Houghton to have the Henry Moore Foundation involved in this year’s exhibition. We feel honoured that the Foundation are lending such a range of important work and have agreed to curate the show for us. We are also extremely grateful to our sponsors, particularly the Gagosian Gallery.” Lord Cholmondeley More Past Exhibitions Richard Long Earth Sky | 2017 James Turrell Lightscape | 2015 Damien Hirst Paintings & Sculptures | 2018 Past Exhibitions Stay well-informed Don't miss a thing. - Richard Long at Houghton Hall and Gardens
30 April - 26 October, 2017 Richard Long 'EARTH SKY' The Exhibition Considered one of the most important artists of his generation, Turner Prize-winning British landscape artist Richard Long conceived and created each piece for its own particular place in the house and grounds of Houghton Hall. Artworks specially created for the EARTH SKY exhibition utilised a variety of materials, including local carr stone, flint from Castle Acre, trees from the Estate, and Cornish slate. These works accompanied the permanent Long sculpture, Full Moon Circle, which was commissioned for Houghton in 2003. Mud paintings adorned the colonnades, while smaller-scale works were displayed in gallery spaces, alongside historic materials related to the artist’s career. About the Artist Sir Richard Long, CBE, RA, born on June 2, 1945, is an English sculptor renowned as one of Britain's best-known land artists. Long holds the distinction of being shortlisted four times for the Turner Prize and won in 1989 for his piece "White Water Line." Based in his birth city of Bristol, Long studied at Saint Martin's School of Art before developing his diverse body of work encompassing sculpture, photography, and text. His artworks are permanently exhibited at prestigious venues such as the Tate and Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, along with galleries worldwide. Long's art expands the notion of sculpture, integrating performance and conceptual elements, often utilizing natural materials like earth, rock, and stone. His exhibitions feature these materials alongside documentary photographs of his performances and explorations, broadening the boundaries of contemporary art. Acknowledgements EARTH SKY curated by Lorcan O’Neill, in association with the artist. Houghton thanks the sponsors Howes Percival, Lisson Gallery, Christie's, Galleria Lorcan O'Neill Roma, Audemars Piguet, Sperone Westwater, Lottery and Eastern Daily Press. “I am delighted that such an important exhibition of Richard Long’s work will be presented at Houghton including many new works. My hope is that in time Houghton will become a ‘must-see’ destination for those interested in contemporary art and sculpture.” Lord Cholmondeley More Past Exhibitions James Turrell Lightscape | 2015 Houghton Revisited Old Masters | 2013 Damien Hirst Paintings & Sculptures | 2018 Past Exhibitions Stay well-informed Don't miss a thing. - The Estate at Houghton Hall and Gardens, Norfolk
The Estate / See & Do / The Estate Diverse Agriculture and Environmental Stewardship The Houghton Estate is primarily arable, like most land in this part of Norfolk. There are four farms and large tracks of mixed woodlands, some dating back to the time of Sir Robert Walpole. In 2002, it was decided to convert part of the estate for organic farming, both to ensure the long-term fertility of the soil and to protect sensitive habitats. The remainder of the organic land fits within an arable rotation, producing wheat, barley, and vegetables, as well as fodder for the animals. Preserving Biodiversity Conservation has always been an important factor at Houghton. The whole estate is managed according to a policy agreed with Natural England. This helps maintain a healthy population of many species which are becoming rarer, such as skylarks, English partridge, and barn owls, as well as a wide array of flora and fauna. We spent a fantastic few hours enjoying all it had to offer. White deer roam the grounds and they were a joy to watch. The parkland is well maintained and there are lots of deer to be seen. We saw a large herd of white deer. The grounds are magnificent with the ghostly white deer meandering around under mature trees. The walled garden was simply magnificent. We left with so many ideas for our garden. You can easily spend an hour or two strolling round. We had a most enjoyable morning looking around the amazing walled garden. I am no expert gardener, but I loved this place. The flowers, shrubs, fruit trees, hedges and lawns were laid out brilliantly.
