Houghton Hall & Gardens: An Exceptional Day Out for Every Visitor!
Constructed in the 1720s for Britain's first Prime Minister, Sir Robert Walpole, Houghton Hall is now the residence of the 7th Marquess of Cholmondeley, a direct descendant of Sir Robert Walpole, and his family. The Hall, surrounded by extensive parkland, is known for its iconic white fallow deer and features notable attractions, including an award-winning Walled Garden, the world's largest private collection of model soldiers in the Model Soldier Museum, and a charming Cafe and Gift Shop.
Additionally, the Sculpture Park features an impressive permanent collection of contemporary sculptures. In 2024, major solo exhibitions by Antony Gormley and Magdalene Odundo are scheduled.
A great day out however you explore.
Where possible we make provisions to ensure Houghton is accessible for wheelchair, mobility scooter and buggy users. The whole stable block is wheelchair/buggy friendly, but the stable yard has small cobbled stones. In the Walled Garden, two mobility scooters and seating are available. Note that some paths are gravelled. At the House, wheelchairs are provided, and a lift is available upon request, as State Rooms are up one flight of stairs.
Guide dogs and assistance dogs are permitted.
